Chapter Eleven

Susannah and Saffy left the bedroom ahead of us to scout around and make sure the coast was clear. It was, so we crept down the stairs and took our places in the kitchen.

‘Right, I’m getting into these,’ Brittany said, climbing onto the kitchen table and wrapping chains around her wrists, which she held high as if she were chained half-naked to the ceiling. ‘You grab the whip and stand as if you’re about to torture me,’ she added.

I picked up the leather horse whip Eva had left on the table and snarled, striking a pose.

‘Now, a quick fire spell will finish this off nicely,’ Susannah said, grinning as she sprinkled a line of salt and something which smelled slightly sulphuric in front of us. ‘I’ll trigger it when they come in, okay, so don’t freak, Jess.’

‘We’re ready,’ I yelled to Daniel, trying to pull my face into a seriously wicked expression, but totally failing.

The door swung open and Susannah flicked her fingers at the line on the floor, so that four foot high blue flames shot up in front of us, whilst Brittany yowled and writhed on the table. It took all I had not to burst out laughing, when Eva leapt backwards out of the room, cursing as she careered into Daniel, who was sporting a toga and totally rocking the Greek god outfit.

A second later they were back in the room, their eyes saucer-like as they took in the hellish tableau before them.

‘Woah!’ Daniel exclaimed, his eyes darting from Brittany to me, where he stared, entranced.

‘You like?’ I whispered.

He swallowed and stepped closer, his eyes travelling the length of my almost naked body, making me feel as hot as I looked.

‘So when you said you were going to magic something up, you weren’t kidding were you?’ Eva drawled at Brittany, her eyes slightly closed as they flashed between the two of us.

Brittany shook her head, grinning and a dark curl fell loose from the ponytail framing her face, just as Bear opened the back door and stepped into the room. We all swivelled round, Brittany in her chains and this time I couldn’t hold back the laugh as I saw his shocked face.

‘Y..you..you’re red!’ he stammered.

‘Erm yep, I guess so,’ Brittany said, her face clouding over, her eyes flicking to mine, and I knew why instantly. This was definitely the wrong reaction. She wanted a reaction like Daniel’s. She wanted him to want her, but instead he looked confused, and more than a little scared.

‘Arghh!’ I exclaimed, as a shiver passed over the length of my body. I looked at Brittany and knew she’d felt the ward trigger at the same time. Two seconds later there was another spine-tingling shiver and immediately after yet another, just as the doorbell chimed.

‘Party time!’ Daniel shouted, winking at me, before going to answer the door.

‘We should have deactivated the wards,’ Brittany whispered, once she had climbed off the table. I nodded. ‘I can’t cope with it going off every time someone comes to the door.
